T C Rowan designs, fabricates and installs steel canopies, access walkways, gantries and plant room support steelwork for industrial and commercial buildings. From an entrance canopy over a goods door to a full maintenance access route around rooftop plant, the same Banbury team surveys the site, produces the fabrication drawings, builds the steel in our own workshop and erects it. That single line of responsibility from drawing to final bolt is what keeps an access or canopy package from arriving wrong, clashing with existing structure and stalling the works. This is a specialist part of our wider industrial steelwork capability.
Steel canopies and entrance canopies
Steel canopies protect entrances, loading bays, walkways, plant and external storage from the weather while giving a building a finished, deliberate look. We fabricate the structural canopy steel: columns, beams, rafters, brackets and fixing details, ready to take whatever roofing or cladding finish the project calls for.
Typical work includes entrance and reception canopies, walkway and link canopies between buildings, loading bay and goods door canopies, and covered external areas such as smoking shelters, cycle stores and bin stores. Where a canopy fixes back to an existing structure, we survey the real fixing points rather than working from assumed dimensions, so the steel lands cleanly on site.
Access walkways, gantries and platforms
Industrial and commercial sites need safe, compliant routes to reach plant, valves, services and equipment that sit at height or across a roof. We fabricate steel access walkways, gantries, maintenance platforms and the supporting framework that carries them.
This covers raised walkways across roofs and between buildings, gantries over plant and process equipment, maintenance and inspection platforms, and the access steel that ties them into ladders, external staircases and fire escapes. Decking, grating, handrail, kick plate and edge protection are fabricated as part of the package so the finished route is ready to use.
Plant room and rooftop support steelwork
Plant rooms and roofs carry heavy, awkward equipment: air handling units, chillers, condensers, tanks, pumps and the services that connect them. We fabricate the support steelwork that holds it all: frames, plinths, bearers, dunnage steel and platforms sized to the equipment and the structure beneath.
For M&E contractors fitting out a plant room or installing rooftop plant, having the support steel designed, fabricated and installed by one firm removes the coordination gaps between the steel and the mechanical package. We work to the equipment schedule and the engineer’s loadings, fabricate to drawing, and install the support steel ready for the plant to land.
Mezzanine-adjacent access steel
Access steelwork and mezzanine floors frequently meet on the same job: a new platform needs stairs, a walkway, edge protection and the steel to tie it back to the building. We fabricate the access elements that surround and connect a mezzanine floor, including landings, walkways, handrail and the supporting framework, as a single coordinated package rather than a set of parts from different suppliers.
Design, loadings and compliance
Canopies, walkways, gantries, platforms and plant support steel all carry loads, whether that is wind and snow on a canopy, foot traffic and live loading on a walkway, or equipment weight on a support frame. Those loadings, along with guarding heights, edge protection and barrier design, must be set by the project’s structural engineer or designer and worked to the relevant standards. We fabricate to those drawings and calculations rather than guessing sizes.
T C Rowan is CE approved and fabricates to BS EN 1090 execution standards, the recognised standard for structural steelwork in the UK. Material traceability is available on request, so the steel in an access route or support frame can be traced back to its source where the project requires it. Welding is carried out by qualified, coded welders, and the same insured team that fabricates the steel carries out the on-site installation. Where exact loadings, spans or section sizes would help your planning, the honest answer is that they depend on the equipment, the structure and the engineer’s calculation, so the best next step is a free quote against your drawings.
Frequently asked questions
Can you fabricate steel access walkways and gantries to suit existing plant?
Yes. We survey the existing layout, then design and fabricate access walkways, gantries and maintenance platforms to fit around the plant and structure already in place. Walkway loadings, guarding heights and edge protection are designed to the relevant standards and confirmed by the project engineer, so the access route is safe to use and matches what has been approved.
Do you design and fabricate rooftop and plant room support steelwork?
Yes. We fabricate support frames, plinths, bearers and platforms for rooftop plant, plant room equipment and services. Where the steel carries equipment loads or sits on the roof structure, the support design and any loadings are confirmed by a structural engineer, and we fabricate to those drawings rather than assuming sizes.
Can you handle a turnkey steel canopy from drawing to installation?
Yes. We carry out the site survey, produce fabrication drawings, fabricate the canopy steelwork in our own Banbury workshop, then our own erection team installs it. One firm from drawing to final bolt removes the gaps where access and canopy projects usually go wrong, such as mismeasured fixings and frames that clash with existing structure on site.
What areas do you cover for industrial access and canopy steelwork?
From our Banbury base we cover Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire, with larger projects taken on UK-wide. You can contact us for a free quote on a canopy, walkway or plant room steelwork package on your site.
