T C Rowan is a CE approved structural steelwork contractor in Banbury, fabricating and erecting structural steel for builders, main contractors, developers and structural engineers across Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties. We work to BS EN 1090, take your design from survey or engineer’s drawings through to steel erected on site, and keep the whole job under one roof: drawing office, workshop and our own erection team. That single line of responsibility, from fabrication drawings to the last bolt tightened, is what removes the gaps where structural steel projects usually go wrong.
What structural steelwork we deliver
We fabricate the full structural package, not just isolated members, so the connections that hold a frame together are detailed by the same people who weld them.
- Portal frames for warehouses, industrial units and agricultural buildings, fabricated to your structural engineer’s design or detailed in-house
- Beams and columns in universal beam (UB), universal column (UC), parallel flange channel (PFC), SHS and RHS sections, cut, drilled and finished to drawing
- Connections, cleats and base plates in welded and bolted detail, fabricated to the engineer’s connection design
- Goalpost frames and lintels for structural openings, wall removals and load transfer in extensions and refurbishments
- Mezzanine and floor support steel, including the primary and secondary steelwork that carries a mezzanine deck
- Flitch plates, brackets and bespoke supports for one-off structural details
For single beams and wall-removal work we also run a dedicated RSJ supply and fit service. For the wider fabrication offer, including decorative and architectural steel, see our steel fabrication parent service.
How a structural steel job runs with us
Every structural job follows the same controlled sequence, so you always know what happens next.
- Survey and drawings. We start from your architect’s plans and structural engineer’s calculations, or we carry out our own site survey to measure the real openings and levels. Existing buildings rarely match their drawings, so we check before we cut.
- Fabrication drawings. We produce and issue fabrication drawings for approval, agreeing the specification, steel grades and connection details before any steel is ordered.
- BS EN 1090 fabrication. Members are cut, drilled, welded and finished in our Banbury workshop under BS EN 1090, with the relevant execution class applied to the job.
- Erection on site. Our own erection team installs the steelwork, so the people who drew and welded the connections are the people bolting them up. Site queries get solved by phone in minutes rather than by RFI over weeks.
That continuity is exactly what we delivered on a structural steel and staircase package in Bicester, where design, fabrication and erection sat with one team. Read more about how installation works on our on-site installation and erection page.
Why builders and engineers choose T C Rowan
For a main contractor or developer, the risk in structural steel is the handover gaps: mismeasured openings, clashing connections, steel that arrives wrong and stalls the programme. We are built to close those gaps.
- CE approved and working to BS EN 1090. We hold CE approval and fabricate to BS EN 1090, the standard that governs structural steelwork for construction. Our guide to CE marking and UKCA for structural steel explains what that means for your project and your building control sign-off.
- EXC2 and EXC3 execution classes. We fabricate to the execution class the design requires, typically EXC2 for general structural work and EXC3 where the structure carries higher consequence or fatigue loading.
- S275 and S355 grades with traceability. We work in S275 and S355 structural grades and provide full material traceability on request, so the steel in your building can be tracked back to its certification.
- Experienced, family-run fabricators. We fabricate and erect structural steel across Oxfordshire, on jobs ranging from a single residential beam to multi-tonne commercial packages.
- One fabricator, drawing to erection. Design, detailing, fabrication and erection sit under one roof. No subcontract chain, no lost information, no finger-pointing when something needs fixing on site.

Frequently asked questions
Are you CE approved for structural steelwork?
Yes. T C Rowan is a CE approved steelwork contractor and we fabricate to BS EN 1090, the harmonised standard for structural steel used in construction. We apply the execution class your design calls for, usually EXC2 or EXC3, and can provide a declaration of performance and material traceability on request so your building control body has the evidence it needs.
What steel grades and sections do you fabricate?
We fabricate in S275 and S355 structural grades, using universal beams (UB), universal columns (UC), parallel flange channels (PFC), and structural hollow sections (SHS and RHS). The grade and section are normally specified by your structural engineer; if you do not yet have a design, our drawing office can detail the steelwork from architect’s plans and the building’s loading requirements.
Do you erect the steel as well as fabricate it?
Yes. We are a contractor, not just a fabricator. Our own erection team installs the steelwork on site, which means the connections are designed, welded and bolted by one team. You get a single point of responsibility from fabrication drawing through to erected frame, which is covered in detail on our on-site installation page.
What areas do you cover for structural steel?
We are based in Banbury, Oxfordshire, and routinely deliver and erect structural steelwork across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and Berkshire. Banbury sits central to the region, with Oxford, Bicester and Brackley all within easy reach of our workshop. Get in touch with your location and we will confirm cover and arrange a site survey.
